Director of Development and Community Relations

MAJOR FUNCTIONS: The person in this position will be responsible for all efforts to increase the Agency’s funding base, procure funds while promoting its mission and programs, and maintain strong communication with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and donors. Adhering to a budget and focusing on meeting fundraising goals are critical components of this position.



  1. Locates sources of funding, approaching suitable funders and soliciting major donors as appropriate for identified goals.
  2. Creates and administers fundraising programs and activities and coordinates with and delegates tasks to the Marketing Associate as needed.
  3. Organizes and manages special initiatives and events.
  4. Builds upon and creates key relationships to expand the agency’s funding base to ensure the organization’s programs and goals are realized.
  5. Perform as primary liaison for external funders apart from those directed by programs, i.e., United Way, TDOT, local and national community grants, etc.
  6. Coordinate agency representation in the community to present the Waves story and educate the community about available services for people with developmental disabilities. Promote agency program components as appropriate to targeted audiences.
  7. Encourages strategic alliances with other businesses and organizations that will promote the agency’s mission and programs.
  8. Oversee the Marketing Associate’s coordination of ongoing and one-time volunteer projects.
  9. Develop relationships with local media and pitch stories when favorable to the agency.
  10. Develop and disseminate all media advisories, press releases, and press statements on behalf of the agency. Gain approvals from the Executive Director as needed.
  11. Maintain an up to date media distribution/contact list.
  12. Develop and maintain all marketing collateral. This includes brochures, fliers, banners, signage, displays, letterhead, business cards, and vehicle signage.
  13. Collaborate with the Board of Directors for fundraising objectives and provide updates during regularly scheduled Board meetings.
  14. Oversee social media management and marketing. Receive weekly updates from the Marketing Associate on Social Media metrics and provide direction as needed.
  15. Manage marketing for all agency fundraising events and mechanisms, including but not limited to: Annual Breakfast, Fall Event, Kroger Community Rewards, etc.
  16. Oversee the Marketing Associate on content management for Waves’ website.
  17. Oversee the Marketing Associate on various agency newsletter creation and dissemination.
  18. Coordinate the planning and execution of the Waves of Awareness podcast, including funding, booking, recording, editing, publishing, and promotion.
  19. Other responsibilities may be assigned that involve funding opportunities and/or community outreach.


Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, or nonprofit management with five years of experience in a professional field and two to three years in development or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to be self-motivated and disciplined. Flexible with scheduling and available to work evenings and weekends as needed. Demonstrated experience in fundraising. Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
